The Stevenson Language Skills (SLS) method changed our son’s life. Despite excelling in school on the surface, he couldn’t truly read, compensating with context clues and guesswork. Traditional support systems failed us, but The Stevenson Reading Program provided a clear, fun, and sequential approach that built his confidence and taught him to read in record time.

I first learned of Stevenson Language Skills (SLS) when my first son was in first grade. He was in the top reading class from day 1 and made all A’s, but took three times as long as his peers to get his work done. He could not read, and none of his teachers knew it. He was compensating by using other context clues and knowledge to figure out the answer. The school district was not only unhelpful, but were obstructive in getting help. We had to go to our pediatrician to get a referral for testing. He tested very highly in IQ and verbal skills, but had 3 “learning disabilities”. The only help seemed to be in very expensive private schools, or dyslexia clinics, which he did not have. And then we heard of someone who tutored Stevenson, which was gaining quite a reputation for helping children. SLS was the answer for him, and many others! His tutor was a certified teacher with special ed certification. She was born to teach. She had understanding and empathy for the kids she worked with. She knew how important it was for a child to have confidence in their ability and that they can learn! She changed our lives.

SLS is fun, clear, and sequential. It doesn’t assume knowledge that has not been given, ask for guesses and then play “gotcha” when you guess wrong. He felt smart for the first time in a while. And that is absolutely huge! SLS taught him to read in record time. That was just the beginning. He continued to build his vocabulary, learning whether a word was a noun or a verb, or belonged in “another barrel”. He learned how to write, punctuate, and how to paint pictures with words by adding adjectives. He learned what a preposition is and how to use it. SLS gave him a very strong foundation to build on. And he did. He graduated with honors from Texas Tech Honors College and is now an executive in a global company. His job is primarily analysis, problem solving, speaking, and writing. He has great empathy for those who struggle, and is a gifted mentor to others.

Beyond reading, Stevenson gave him a solid foundation in writing, grammar, and vocabulary that set him up for lifelong success. Today, he’s an honors graduate and an executive at a global company, using the skills and empathy he gained through the Stevenson Reading Program to mentor others. We can’t recommend The Stevenson Reading program enough!”
